Matt is the Group Technology Director ( Group CIO) of WM Morrison Supermarkets Ltd, and has been with the company for 10 years. Morrisons is Britain’s largest manufacturer of fresh food, and its fourth largest retailer with takings of £17.5bn per annum. At Morrisons, Matt is accountable for day to day operational service, as well as the delivery of the company’s strategic plans to improve productivity & create scalable & profitable growth end to end.
A Geography graduate from Exeter University, Matt started at Anderson Consulting’s Retail practice in 1996 and rose through the organisation until he was appointed as a Partner in 2005. At what became Accenture, he worked with retailers globally such as Tesco, Dixons, Sainsburys and AS Watsons, and spent time building the Retail practice in the Far East. From there, he joined Best Buy in 2008, the largest consumer electronics retailer in the world, where he held senior management positions in the US and within their joint venture with Carphone Warehouse.
During his 10 years at Morrisons, Matt has held leadership positions in Marketing, Operations and Trading. His main role has been to scale profitably the fledgling Online and Digital business areas from early 2015. During this time, Matt oversaw the restructuring of the online business to enable store pick home delivery, picking from fulfilment centres and national online expansion with multiple partners, including Amazon and Deliveroo. From early 2019, Matt took on Group Technology in addition to Online, leading changes to ways of working and a modernisation programme across the function. Upon joining the Operations Board in 2020, Matt took on accountability for Supply Chain Operations as well, and has held this role during the highly disruptive periods we have experienced in very recent times such as through the pandemic, and post Brexit.
